Throughout the year, the ArtWorks community meets a Young Artist from one of our programs who has used the creative and performing arts to help them cope with their illness.

April 2019 ARTIST OF THE MONTH: Delaney
Age 8

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Delaney has been part of our ArtWorks family since she was diagnosed with high-risk Stage IV Neuroblastoma when she was just three and a half months old. Throughout her diagnosis, treatment and now remission, she and her family used art and music to help them heal. Delaney has participated in more than 7 Express Yourself events where she has shared her love of the arts with her fellow Young Artists, family and friends.

Delaney started to play the ukulele just before Express Yourself 2018. Her Music Therapist, Shaundra McCarter from St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital, suggested she perform the ukulele piece at a later date to give herself more time to practice but Delaney was determined to perform so she practiced every day. She told ArtWorks,
“My music therapist must not have realized how determined I was because I told her I wanted to perform this year.”
Not only did Delaney get on stage and perform with Shaundra but she also composed the original piece entitled “Unplugged.”
