May 2016 ARTIST OF THE MONTH: Briana
Age 17
ABOUT THE ARTIST
May is the month of EXPRESS YOURSELF-NY, so it seems only appropriate to feature a Young Artist who will be returning this year to Express Yourself as May’s ARTIST OF THE MONTH-BRIANA! Briana, age 17 and an Express Yourself participant for the past three years, is an amazing poet. And this year, we are excited to exhibit a painting by Briana, who continues to explore new modes of creative expression!
As Artist of the Month, Briana shares her take on art, life, and her experiences with the ArtWorks community: “I am 17 years old and getting ready for college. I was diagnosed with Spina bifida, Myelomeningocele, and Hydrocephalus shortly before I was born, and I face many challenges due to the disabilities and medical issues I have. But I do not let them get me down! I try my best in whatever I do even if the results are not what I would like. I’m a happy person. I like to go to different places, meet new people and just have fun. I have made so many improvements over the years which makes me very happy.”
“I joined ArtWorks through the Hospital for Special Surgery Child Life Program, and have been participating as an artist and a performer in the New York Express Yourself showcase. My motivation as an artist is the drive to create something beautiful that I thought was difficult. My inspirations are my awesome family, the wonderful people I’ve had in my life, and the many great experiences I’ve had. Creating is fun and I get to use my imagination! I am now doing ceramics in school and I created a lovely shoe. I am most proud of it because it was really difficult and I was able to create all the different parts and put them together. It is beautiful.”
