December 2018 ARTIST OF THE MONTH: Hope
Age 10
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Our December Young Artist Highlight is Hope, from Hackensack University Medical Center! At just 10 years-old, Hope wrote and illustrated HSP Skin,which details her journey after being diagnosed with Henoch-Schonlein purpura (HSP), a disorder that affects her kidneys and causes rashes on her skin. What started off as a simple school assignment turned into Hope’s way of navigating through HSP and finding the beauty within herself.
“My favorite part was dedicating HSP Skin to my mom. She has helped me more than anyone and because of her, I’m healed.”

HSP Skin was featured in this year’s Express Yourself gallery exhibition and we were lucky enough to also have had Hope read an excerpt for our audience of over 150 Young Artists and their families. She even hopes for it to be published one day!
“We are so proud of Hope for overcoming not only the physical conditions but also the social and emotional part of her ordeal. Hope writing about it shows how she isn’t afraid to let people know who she is.”
