Throughout the year, the ArtWorks community meets a Young Artist from one of our programs who has used the creative and performing arts to help them cope with their illness.

March 2018 ARTIST OF THE MONTH: Khamijzha
Age 11

ABOUT THE ARTIST

“I would like other Young Artists to not be afraid to paint whatever is on their mind because with art, anyone can express themselves and explore.”

-Khamijzha

We are ready to kick off Child Life Month with 11 year-old, Khamijzha, who was nominated to be March’s Young Artist Highlight by her Child Life Specialists at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital. Khamijzha has been a part of the ArtWorks family since 2013! This past year she had her piece, “The St. Joseph’s Hospital Center for the Kids” on exhibition at ArtWorks’ Express Yourself 2017 which you can see below!

Khamijzha not only explores the fine arts but she has immersed herself in the photography world as well! When Teaching Artist, Steven Hazlett, is leading a photography workshop at the hospital, you can always find Khamijzha searching for a new subject to photograph!

“It’s really awesome! I like making new stuff, creating new ideas and turning it into art.
I learned how to take pictures and be even more creative!”

Child Life Specialists, Kelsey Gitchell and Julie Mayers work closely with Khamijzha and are amazed by her ability to express herself. They proudly said,

“Khamijzha works hard to make beautiful art for staff members to hang up and brighten their offices. Her connection with Steven and photography is wonderful to see. She is so talented and it comes across in each photo!”

Khamijzha, we thank you for sharing your story with ArtWorks and all our Young Artists! We can’t wait to see what your artistic journey has in store for you!
