Throughout the year, the ArtWorks community meets a Young Artist from one of our programs who has used the creative and performing arts to help them cope with their illness.

August 2016 ARTIST OF THE MONTH: Paulyn
Age 9

ABOUT THE ARTIST

This August, we are thrilled to introduce artist, comedian, and our new ARTIST OF THE MONTH: PAULYN! At Express Yourself-New York this past May, our showcase was filled with a number of awe-inspiring performances from beautiful poetry recitations to heart-warming duets. We can always count on our amazing Young Artists to leave the audience speechless. However, Paulyn’s performance stood out from the crowd as her gift to the ArtWorks community was laughter!

Paulyn who is 9-years old Paulyn, spends long hours at the hospital receiving chemotherapy. Paulyn tells us she was always in the playroom creating art projects through ArtWorks’ programs.

She tells us, “My first motivation for creating is that I love the arts! I just start something, then an idea comes into my mind and I just continue to create. I can begin with a pencil or marker, then start using different paints and brushes, glue, papers, etc. I especially like glitter and glitter paint. I’m very proud of a jewelry box that I made for my mom last year for Mother’s Day. It’s made of wood and I had to hammer it together. I used a screwdriver too and then I painted it with glitter paint. I made it in the hospital.”

When asked more about her life, Paulyn stated, “Although I’ve been sick, I’ve met Rachel Platten, Mr. G, the Weatherman from WPIX-TV and I’ve been on TV with them too! I’ve done photo shoots with other foundations, and I’ve met some interesting people.”

We are so grateful to have had the opportunity to meet such an energetic and inspiring artist! ArtWorks looks forward to more art and comedy acts by Paulyn in the future.
